Ocean

Gestural Abstraction
Acrylic on acid free paper
27.9cm x 35.5cm
Little Shemogue, 2016

The Ocean – our lungs – is in peril due to humankind’s refusal to not only accept climate change but to make drastic cultural, political and economical shifts to stop our collective death spiral. The paint used for this piece is damaging the environment. Acrylic paint is a petroleum-derived polymer – plastic. By using this paint, we continue our reliance on petroleum. I didn’t know this prior to painting the piece – or any of the acrylic in my body of work. This ignorance sadly seems to lend itself to the statement of this piece. I will continue to use the Acrylic paint in my studio until it is all gone. Putting it to paper and canvas is better than throwing it out. After that, Acrylic will never be used in my work again.
